I don’t know a lot about US law, I will be honest, but this seems like yet another step towards the fascist dictatorship of Donald Trump.

It’s really tricky, because on the one hand, the Black Lives Matter movement is hugely important and I totally understand and respect their desire to keep their protests peaceful.

But on the other hand, I sort of feel like people should be rioting about this- because it’s fucking scary what is happening right now.

this is a huge fucking deal.

habeas corpus is meant to protect detainees by giving them right to report unlawful detention, and protects them against indefinite imprisonment – by suspending this, people can be detained without being given a reason, for however long. many protesters have been held for more than 24 hours; some have been held for up to 36.

those who have been released from detainment have said that detainees are being held without being given proper amount of water, soap or hand sanitizer, as hand sanitizer dispensers had been removed from holding cells, medical attention, or masks; many cops are not wearing masks. detainees are also being refused phone calls, giving families and lawyers no way to find them. (source, source

the reasoning judge james burke gave for this was that, due to COVID, the pace of arraignments has slowed, as COVID has necessitated remote (virtual) hearings. however, multiple attorneys for Legal Aid (an nyc law firm that works specifically in cases where clients have been systemically neglected by the city) said that this was unacceptable, as the nypd has the resources necessary to arraign people faster, and that this was purposeful – due to a history of deliberately delaying arraignments because they “don’t like what they’re doing on the street,” and specifically now as the protests are targeting police brutality. (source, source)

detainees are being kept in cramped holding cells, filled to over capacity. they are being held in an enclosed space, often without masks as they had been taken away from them by police at their time of arrest; they can now be held indefinitely. the risk of infection is staggering. nypd’s assistant deputy commissioner stated, in an attempt to quell this issue, that protesters aren’t social distancing on the street – ignoring the fact that being outside with masks, with the room to social distance (barring instances of the police kettling, which, by the way, happened in the bronx last night) is a far cry from being detained indoors, en masse without immediate access to sanitizer, soap, and masks.

while these arrests include people who are acting violently, they also massively include people who are peacefully protesting past the 8pm curfew (including people sitting on their own front stoops). this is a low-level offense that does not necessitate detainment. in addition, cops are arresting food delivery people for being out past curfew, even though they are considered essential workers; delivery workers are overwhelmingly immigrants and people of color.

the gross misconduct of the nypd continues to escalate, and continues to be upheld by city officials who consider reports of police brutality, from journalists in the middle of these protests, “a different reality” than that seen from city hall. here’s looking at you, de blasio

i’m not quite sure what this suspension of habeas corpus does to affect bail funds; but, here are a list of nyc-specific bail funds and organizations:

Bronx Bail Fund (via Venmo)

Brooklyn Bail Fund (note: they are not currently taking funds as their needs have been met.)

COVID Bail Out NYC

NYC Liberty Fund

Things to do in lockdown: outfit experimentation using the same dress.

I tried to create a load of mix-and-match coords using the same main piece from Devil Inspired. I really love wa lolita so the Grateful Crane dress from Red Maria matches a lot of the pieces in my wardrobe. I think I have the yabane Red Maria tights (in the second set of outfits) in all the colours because I have no self control.
I wanted to create a kind of capsule wardrobe with outfits that would work for a variety of events and seasons, so I tried to reuse pieces as much as possible. I used lace haori or blouses for warm-weather coords and the Nya Nya Lolita haori blouse/coat for cold-weather, but it also works well with more traditional blouses for a classic look, or even himesode lace blouses like this for something a little cuter. For the more gothic coords I used some accessories from Na+H, another highly recommended brand!
I’d like to try this again with another main piece, or even the same JSK but force myself not to reuse accessories~

Summer is considered ghosts season in Japan, chilling stories being perfect to cool you down ;)

Kuniyoshi Utagawa and his apprentices were well known youkai ukiyo e artists. One of their famous woodblock serie depicted the kabuki play “The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road - Okazaki” also named today “The cat stone of Okabe”:

This well know Edo ghost story took place in Okabe, then a post-station on the Tōkaidō Road. One of its famous landmarks was a cat-shaped stone near the village shrine.

An old woman had once haunted the grounds, terrifying the girls serving at the sanctuary. The witch was said to lure them into her house to devour them.

Samurai decided to stop her.  As they tried to hit her, the witch suddenly shoke her disguised, revealing her true self: huge cat ears, paws and fork tail. She was a cat youkai! Adding to the madness, local cats appeared wearing a tenugui towels on their head, dancing and meowling loudly «We’re cats! We’re cats! ».

Eventually, after a bon-chilling fight, the witch finaly turned into Okabe’s cat stone, never to be seen again. I wonder if cats can still be seen there ;)

Overdressed for not doing a lot during self-isolation, but I wanted to create a coord for the handmade rosettes I’ve been creating lately and this is what I ended up with.

I’m also wearing brooches from Mystic, a Japanese indie brand who I buy from fairly regularly. They specialise in gothic/classic designs and often have circus elements which I love. The brooches are very well-constructed and often feature whimsical moving parts (in this case, the bat’s head) and lace for extra texture. Please check them out!

Long time no see!! I’m going to try to post more regularly again!
I wasn’t able to leave my apartment until recently so I decided to pass the time by trying out different pieces that I hadn’t yet worn. This time, I wore this dress I received from Devil Inspired. It’s Gabriel’s Grave from Foxtrot Lolita and I cannot express how much I love it! I’ve been after a few more printed gothic pieces that are easy to wear both dressed up and dressed down, and the print in this one is so beautiful~

Although people usually have lots of recommendations for sweet and classic brands on taobao, gothic brands are often neglected so I want to review more of the lesser-known brands that I really like. Foxtrot pieces have very good construction and use really lovely fabrics - this one is embossed, which adds such a depth to the texture of the piece. I should have taken a photo of the back, because the spine print and decorative corset lacing is probably my favourite part of the dress! This is actually my second JSK from the brand (the other being the Oath halterneck) and I’m really hoping to get more! I think next on my list will be the Sister OP because I’m always drawn to religious-themed pieces. I’m really looking forward to seeing what else they release in the future! I think this dress will match really well with Japanese indie brand Na+H, so maybe I’ll review some of their pieces next
